We have a tradition at our house of watching The Patriot on the 4th of July every year because it is one of my favorite movies and to remind us of what we are celebrating on Independence Day. Even though it is historical fiction it does remind us of the sacrifices made 240 years ago that afford us the freedoms we enjoy as Americans today.
While watching it this year I noticed a truth that can be applied to us here in Enterprise. The scene is in the church when Gabriel Martin is recruiting volunteers to join the South Carolina Militia to fight for freedom from the tyranny of King George. When his initial plea for volunteers doesn’t produce any results he gets some help from his (spoiler alert if you haven’t seen the movie) future wife Anne Howard when she says,
“Will you now, when you are needed most, stop at only words? Is that the sort of men you are? I ask only that you act upon the beliefs of which you have so strongly spoken and in which you so strongly believe.”
After this exhortation men, one by one, begin standing to volunteer. And the rest, as “they” say, is history.
What does this have to do with Enterprise?
Where I think this can be applied here in Enterprise is in the upcoming city elections on August 23rd. Many of you who read this blog have shared with me how you agree with what I have written here about the apparent tone deafness of the current elected and appointed officials, who have been in these positions, in most cases, for many years.
Will you stand up?
So the question I have for you is will you stand up and go to the polls on August 23rd and vote to make the changes you have indicated you want to see? There are exceptional alternative candidates for Mayor and three City Council positions so you do have choices this year.
Talk is cheap as “they” say but taking action requires resolve and determination on your part. If you feel comfortable in volunteering to help the candidate in your district or the citywide mayoral candidate your help would be welcomed and appreciated. I know many of you do not feel you have the freedom to do this and understand your reasons.
You can express your support to the candidates to let them know you are going to stand up for them in August and then follow through on that promise though. No one will be following you to the voting booth.
That is what I am encouraging you to do in the next 7 weeks. The only way change will come to Enterprise is if you play your role in bringing it with your support over the next seven weeks and your decision to get out and vote or stay home in August. You can watch the clip of the movie I referred to at the link below.
As Gabriel asks who is with us?
Will you act upon the beliefs of which you have so strongly spoken and in which you so strongly believe? Or, will you stay home and accept the lie you cannot make a difference, in effect supporting the status quo?
Will you stand up? Will you get out and vote?
Your opportunity to hire the people you want to serve for the next four years is August 23rd. The choice is up to you. You do have several excellent alternatives to the status quo this year. I am confident you will choose wisely and look forward to see the results of your actions.
Until next time…
