Time for choosing…again

On November 8th the United States of America will once again choose its next President. Some have made this decision more complex than it really needs to be. I cannot and will not try to tell anyone who to vote for. I wouldn’t expect you to listen or keep reading if I did. I can, however, share some of my thoughts on the election and try to simplify the choice we will be making on Election Day.

America in Name Only?

I hope the title got your attention. That was the intent. I know those who follow politics are aware of Republicans in Name Only or RINOs as they are less than affectionately called. This is not that but it IS related, sort of. They both end the same way – In Name Only.

I just finished reading If You Can Keep It, the latest book by Eric Metaxas.41MVx69VbUL._SX329_BO1,204,203,200_One of the central thoughts put forth in this book is the fact if we, as Americans, do not wake up and take control of our government and our country we are on track to becoming America in Name Only. I agree with his assessment. We have been heading down this path for many years now. Where we are headed is further and further away from the principles that founded this country and made America unique and the country all others want to immigrate to. Like many Ben Carson supporters I have had a lot to digest over the past week, from the suspension of his campaign, to My Faith Votes, to his recent endorsement of Donald Trump.

Integrity Matters

Integrity is defined as the quality of being honest and fair. Synonyms include character, decency, goodness, honesty and morality. A further discussion of integrity by Webster’s says integrity implies trustworthiness and incorruptibility to a degree that one is incapable of being false to a trust, responsibility, or pledge.

One who has integrity is also honest and trustworthy.

Once Essential

Integrity is what I look for in the person I would want as President. I may be a radical and old-fashioned but integrity is the starting point for any candidate in my evaluation. At one time this was a characteristic most Americans considered desirable and even essential for the person chosen to lead the country as President.

Sadly, in 2016, this is no longer the case. The leaders in the polls for both major political parties are also the least honest and trustworthy of all the candidates. To me that is sad and that just doesn’t make any sense, common or otherwise to me. A majority believe the front runners are the least honest or trustworthy and yet, they are still the front runners.

If America elects a President the majority of people consider dishonest and untrustworthy how can they trust any of the promises they are making in their campaign speeches, debates and policy papers?

Who is most trustworthy?

The candidate who consistently ranks highest in the honest and trustworthy category is Dr. Ben Carson. This makes perfect sense to me. Consider his career prior to retirement and being drafted into this presidential election. Think about it. He is a retired neurosurgeon who has been trusted by thousands of patients over many years. That kind of track record can reasonably predict his future actions will follow the same pattern.

Do you trust your doctor?

The doctor patient relationship is one of the most private, guarded and trusted relationships most people have outside of their spouse and family. Thousands of patients and their families have trusted Dr. Carson over his career to be honest with them about the diagnosis and possible solutions and expected outcomes of brain surgery. It takes a considerable amount of trust when your child’s life hangs in the balance.

That trust is a large part of why Dr. Carson is the most trusted candidate in the Presidential race this year and probably one of the most trusted ever.

Integrity does matter

Think about how that career and trust can be applied to the problems facing America. Dr. Carson would assemble the teams necessary to analyze and diagnose the root cause of the issues. Solutions would then be developed to solve the problems. He would then be honest with America, just as he was with his patients, providing the diagnosis of the problem and the plan to solve the problem. Making wise decisions and being honest with the American people are two traits any successful President of the United States of America must possess.

Accomplishments Unmatched

Dr. Ben Carson’s accomplishments are unmatched.

  • He has received 67 honorary degrees.
  • He received America’s highest civilian award, the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
  • CNN and Time reported he was one of America’s top 20 scientists
  • The Library of Congress named him one of 89 “Living Legends.”

Yet, even with all these awards and honors he has maintained his humility. Don’t mistake humility and his calm measured demeanor as weakness. Have you ever thought about the resolve and nerves and inner strength required to be on your feet for hours performing intricate surgeries in which the slightest mistake or twitch could be fatal? If not think about it now. He has repeated this thousands of times during his career.

I still hope the American people will recognize this unique opportunity before it is too late. Dr. Ben Carson is a man whose

  • And is willing to serve America at a time when America needs a leader who can change the direction of the country and unite Americans once again.

How confident are you?

How confident are you that your candidate, if you have one, will actually follow through with their campaign promises? If you are basing your confidence on anything other than historical evidence you will be disappointed after the election.

Consider Dr. Carson’s experience during his career analyzing cases, determining best options, communicating this to the patient and family,  leading the teams essential for a successful surgery, and only then performing his role as surgeon. In other words, he has done what he said he would over and over again.

This is a narrative that we can change – Not we the Democrats, not we the Republicans, but We The People of America because there is something special about this nation and we must embrace it and be proud of it and never give it away for the sake of political correctness.”

Experience matters

The word experience is used a lot in presidential campaigns. One thing is true about the current 2016 presidential campaign.

The most common type of experience mentioned is political experience. “Experienced” politicians have brought us to where we are now in America. This statement is true however you assess the current state of our country. I think Ronald Reagan had it right in this quote,

What kind of experience are you looking for in our next President?

So…what kind of experience are you looking for in our next President? That is a relevant question and one I cannot answer for you. All I can do is describe the kind of experience I think is important for the next President to bring into office. If this perspective helps you either make or confirm your own decision, this will have been a worthwhile use of time for me.

Experience I would like our next President to bring into office

  • Experience assessing situations as they arise.
  • Experience in being a continuous learner.
  • Experience in analyzing the situation to determine best and worst case solution scenarios.
  • Experience in asking for wisdom from God to make the best decision.
  • Experience in actually making a critical decision.
  • Experience leading the team executing the plan by setting expectations for and providing the resources and authority to complete it.

This makes experience in facing and resolving many types of situations critical to their success while in office. Being able to solve problems as they arise and not just kick them down the road for the next administration (political experience) is a critical skill needed for any successful president.

Dr. Ben Carson’s experience is unique among presidential candidates and meets all of the criteria mentioned above and will lend itself well to making the decisions that will need to be made as President of the United States of America to move our country forward and keep America safe.

Experience tested and honed in thousands of life and death situations

As a world renowned brain surgeon, Dr. Carson has performed thousands of surgeries. Each of these cases has been unique to that individual and family. Life and death risks and decisions are a regular part of brain surgery.

  • Each case is unique with patient history, options available, and outcomes expected.
  • Continuous medical education is required to determine the best methods of treatment or surgery available.
  • Input from trusted peers and experts is encouraged and considered.
  • Analysis to determine the best case / worst case scenarios and expected outcomes of performing or not performing the surgery.
  • Explaining these options and possible outcomes to the patient and family in terms they can understand and trust. Character, integrity and competence are essential in building this trust. These parents are trusting Dr. Carson and his Gifted Hands with the life of their child.
  • Recommending the best course of action and setting expectations for possible outcomes.
  • Seeking guidance from God through prayer for wisdom to make the best decision to move forward with the surgery or not.
  • Making the decision in a timely manner as time is of the essence. The patient’s life often depends on it.
  • Only then, is the actual surgery performed and this entire process is potentially repeated again during the surgery as the situation warrants.
  • Reporting the results of the surgery to the family of the patient along with follow-up expectations and course of action.
This process has been repeated thousands of times. That is valuable experience.

America is the patient

This type of experience will be invaluable as the leader of the country in assessing and addressing any issues that arise.

  • Each situation will be different with historical data, options available, input from advisers and new tactics and solutions considered and discussed in evaluating each case.
  • Continuous education is required to be cognizant of new tactics or solutions that might be available and applicable in this situation.
  • Analyzing this information to determine the best case and worst case scenarios and possible outcomes of any actions being considered.
  • Asking God through his own prayers and America through their prayers for wisdom to make the best decision to move forward with the prescribed course of action.
  • Making the decision in a timely manner as time is of the essence. America’s future depends on it.
  • Leading the team executing the plan by setting expectations and providing the necessary resources to execute the plan.
  • Reporting the results of the actions taken to the American people along with follow-up expectations and course of action.

I have a dream!

My dream is each eligible voter would realize the importance of the decision facing America in 2016 – voting for the next president – and would follow a similar process in evaluating the candidates and making their own decision. If my dream came true I am confident many of you will come to the same conclusion I have, the experience Dr. Ben Carson would bring to the Presidency – making thousands of critical life and death decisions over his career – is unique among all candidates and would be invaluable in keeping America safe and moving forward.

Every voter will make their own decision and I would never presume to tell anyone who they should vote for. The person the American people select as President is elected to serve and to lead and make critical decisions. My hope is you will make critical decision making experience one of your criteria. Do your own research and don’t depend on the “news” media to make your decision for you. They have their own agenda.

I have made my assessment and Ben Carson is my choice.

Voting is a privilege I do not take for granted and a solemn responsibility I do take seriously. It’s not brain surgery. I am no more a brain surgeon than Jethro from The Beverly Hillbillies. I hope all other non-brain surgeons out there, like me, take your responsibility seriously too.

9-15-01

I still get mad every year when I am reminded of 9-11-01 and what the coward Muslim terrorists did to America. I pray for all those families directly affected by this act of cowardice. If you were alive at that time and live in America you were affected too, maybe not directly by having a family member or friend or someone you know killed or hurt, but you were affected.

Often Reminded – Will NEVER FORGET

I am reminded of this event every time I go through a security line at the airport, which, at that time in my life I was doing rather often. I was working as a consultant, living in Tallahassee and flying to St. Louis every week. I would normally fly up on Monday morning and home on Friday afternoon. I had flown to St. Louis on Monday, 9-10-01, as normal. On that Tuesday just before I walked out the door of my apartment they were reporting a plane had hit the first tower. I heard about the plane hitting the second tower, the Pentagon and Flight 93 later at work. My purpose here is not to recount these events that occurred on 9-11-01. Never Forget_911That has been done and, hopefully, will be done in the future so we, and those who follow us, will Never Forget. I do hope this will be taught truthfully and not through the revisionist filter most history is taught today but know that is probably an unrealistic hope in today’s world.

Meanwhile, back at home

Sharin, as normal, was taking care of things on the home front, which included our four kids AND working as a substitute teacher at the time. On Tuesday, 9-11-01 she was substituting in a first grade class at North Florida Christian School. Three of our children were there but Sarah was at Chiles High School which became an issue when a state of emergency was declared in Florida by Governor Jeb Bush after the attacks. Parents were coming to pick up their children but she could not leave to go get Sarah because of her responsibilities at NFCS. She did ultimately get them all home.

Flights

As you probably know, all air traffic was grounded that Tuesday and did not resume until Friday. I had decided I was going to go home and flying was how I planned to get there and was able to get a Saturday flight scheduled. My thinking was flying was probably the safest way to travel as the likelihood of another terrorist attack via airlines was very slim. I remember we did have to wait for our flight crew on Saturday because some flight crews were just not showing up, some due to the previous days of canceled flights and some because they did not want to fly again yet. I believe the airlines were giving them that option at the time, understandably. There was plenty of room on the planes as I remember too.

Routine and not so routine

 

I did get home that Saturday and gave my family great big hugs. Sarah, Amy, Rachel and Thomas were 14, 11, 7 and 5 respectively at the time. We probably went to Sonny’s for supper that night as that was one of our favorite places to eat and, on Saturday night, kids ate free, so that was our normal routine.

It was also our normal routine when getting the kids to bed to have them say their prayers and pray with them and that is where this story gets good for me. While putting Thomas to bed we talked about what had happened that week and if I was scared by it. I told him I was more angry than scared but everyone also had a right to be scared because what just happened four days earlier was unprecedented and scary. I probably used smaller words at the time but he was pretty fluent in the language for a 5 year old. He had started having conversations and coffee, as he called it, with his PawPaw when he was three. He would often surprise and amaze us with some of the “big” words he would use and use them correctly in conversation.

Anyway, he said he had been thinking a lot lately and a lot this week especially about asking Jesus into his heart to be his savior. He knew what sin was and that he had sinned and he needed a savior and he wanted to get this settled. This was not unexpected since he had been in church since he was an infant. We talked a little more and then he prayed and asked Jesus to come into and live in his heart. This was an exciting time for us and I know the angels in heaven were rejoicing too. I told him from that moment on he did not have to worry about where he would spend eternity. He would be spending it with his sisters, parents, grandparents and all others who have made this decision to accept the gift of eternal life that Jesus offers. Our parents and grandparents are all there waiting for us now.

To God Be the Glory

Thomas was the last of our children to make this decision. He IS the youngest so that was really not unexpected either. Our primary goal as parents was to see our children come to know the Lord and then see them walking in the truth. This event fulfilled that first goal for us. That second goal is a daily work in progress for all of us. I am proud all our children are walking the walk usually much better than I do. I learn as much, probably more, from them as they do from me. We knew from that moment on, regardless of when any of us are called home to Heaven, we will all be reunited there one day and that is an amazing truth we all cherish. It was not an accomplishment we achieved but one He achieved and I still thank Him for that every day.

Thomas went forward that Sunday morning to make his profession of faith public. We met with Pastor Ray that afternoon and he was baptized that night. He did not want to wait but wanted to get it done and get it done that day.00400834297020110427134028999 (2)

9-11-01 – 9-15-01

So, when 9-11 comes around every year I do remember what happened on 9-11-01 and I get mad all over again and pray for all the families whose lives were changed forever that day; but then my thoughts turn to 9-15-01 when Thomas made a decision that would change his life forever and that makes me happy.

With a Firm Reliance on the Protection of Divine Providence

The words below are what set our course for the Independence we now celebrate annually on the 4th of July every year in America. In the midst of barbecues, beaches, family, friends, parades and fireworks as you celebrate the anniversary of this declaration take a few minutes to read these words. They remain profound in wisdom, boldness, courage and are still today quite revolutionary.

This is The Declaration of Independence declaring independence from the King of Britain but it is also a Declaration of Dependence as these men pledge to each other their Lives, our Fortunes and sacred Honor “with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence.” This document is

The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen united States of America,

When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.–That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, –That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.   • He has refused his Assent to Laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public good.
  • He has forbidden his Governors to pass Laws of immediate and pressing importance, unless suspended in their operation till his Assent should be obtained; and when so suspended, he has utterly neglected to attend to them.
  • He has refused to pass other Laws for the accommodation of large districts of people, unless those people would relinquish the right of Representation in the Legislature, a right inestimable to them and formidable to tyrants only.
  • He has called together legislative bodies at places unusual, uncomfortable, and distant from the depository of their public Records, for the sole purpose of fatiguing them into compliance with his measures.
  • He has dissolved Representative Houses repeatedly, for opposing with manly firmness his invasions on the rights of the people.
  • He has refused for a long time, after such dissolutions, to cause others to be elected; whereby the Legislative powers, incapable of Annihilation, have returned to the People at large for their exercise; the State remaining in the mean time exposed to all the dangers of invasion from without, and convulsions within.

  • He has abdicated Government here, by declaring us out of his Protection and waging War against us.

  • He is at this time transporting large Armies of foreign Mercenaries to compleat the works of death, desolation and tyranny, already begun with circumstances of Cruelty & perfidy scarcely paralleled in the most barbarous ages, and totally unworthy the Head of a civilized nation.
  • He has constrained our fellow Citizens taken Captive on the high Seas to bear Arms against their Country, to become the executioners of their friends and Brethren, or to fall themselves by their Hands.
  • He has excited domestic insurrections amongst us, and has endeavoured to bring on the inhabitants of our frontiers, the merciless Indian Savages, whose known rule of warfare, is an undistinguished destruction of all ages, sexes and conditions.

In every stage of these Oppressions We have Petitioned for Redress in the most humble terms: Our repeated Petitions have been answered only by repeated injury. A Prince whose character is thus marked by every act which may define a Tyrant, is unfit to be the ruler of a free people.

Nor have We been wanting in attentions to our Brittish brethren. We have warned them from time to time of attempts by their legislature to extend an unwarrantable jurisdiction over us. We have reminded them of the circumstances of our emigration and settlement here. We have appealed to their native justice and magnanimity, and we have conjured them by the ties of our common kindred to disavow these usurpations, which, would inevitably interrupt our connections and correspondence. They too have been deaf to the voice of justice and of consanguinity. We must, therefore, acquiesce in the necessity, which denounces our Separation, and hold them, as we hold the rest of mankind, Enemies in War, in Peace Friends.

Prayer and Politics

I have always heard and believed the old saying if you don’t vote then you have no right to complain when those elected don’t act in accordance with your beliefs. I still believe that but have come to a new understanding that goes a little deeper. I do vote whenever that privilege avails itself so I do maintain that “right” to complain.

My new understanding has come about over the past few weeks as I have tried to practice what Jesus preached in the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew 5. There are many verses in the Bible that are hard for me to live by. In this sermon where Jesus says, “Love your enemies” and “pray for those who persecute you” those are some of the hardest.

Love Your Enemies

43“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ 44But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. 46For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? 47And if you greet only your brothers,i what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? 48You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

This goes even deeper than the fact this will drive some of them crazy once they become aware you are doing so. Jesus sets a very high standard for us as Christians to aspire to. I fall short every day.

Prayer changes…

One thing I have learned about prayer over the years is it changes the person praying more than the one you are praying to. It is a little bit…ok…enormously presumptuous to think that I am going to change God’s mind about anything anyway. Prayer, if practiced regularly, will, however put my heart and mind more in sync with what God has in mind for me.

Meanwhile…back to my original topic

It has always been difficult to pray for those in leadership when I do not agree with their methods, decisions, or intentions as I understand them. I have prayed they would be removed or replaced but that is not what I am charged to do from God’s Word.

Recently, I have found a way to do this that has worked for me. Maybe I am a little slow to arrive at this truth but I am there now.

Here is how my prayer goes regarding those who God has placed in leadership roles over me.

Leaders Prayer

That’s it. It is pretty simple and yet it is sincere in that it is what I want our leaders to do. This is true regardless of whether it is a leader I happen to have voted for or agree with ideologically. I want all of those who represent us and are supposed to be leading us to make decisions based on the best interests of us. The fact I may disagree with their decisions and direction they are leading is irrelevant. It really is. That may be hard for some of you to believe but it is true.

It is possible my prayers could help change their hearts but it is far more likely mine will be changed.

Not Silent

However, this does not mean I will be a silent observer when I believe decisions being made by those same leaders are ill-advised or are motivated by their own self interests. I am praying for them to make wise decisions and hope they do but I will speak out and share my thoughts and opinions when I don’t believe they did. I will work within our political process to get them removed and replaced by those who will make wise decisions. That is just part of my responsibility to be a good citizen.

Prayer in the Public Square

Contrary to what many want us to believe prayer does have a place in the public square. It is the only way this government, which was designed to serve and protect the people, will work. Anything else will result in chaos or something worse.

As stated in 2 Chronicles 7:14, if my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.

Status Quo Rolls On

Job Interview?

I was not aware at the time, but when I attended the July 30, 2013 Enterprise City School Board meeting I was watching a job interview or trial run. Apparently it went well for the job applicant as she was appointed to the Enterprise City School Board at the most recent Enterprise City Council meeting. If you need to refresh your memory too I wrote about her comments in that board meeting in my Overtime post last August.

I don’t know for a fact this was the case but what I post here is my perception of what I see. That is my perspective on what happened, whether it is peculiar or not I don’t know. Continue reading Status Quo Rolls On
